Ingredients

  • 4 cups apple cider or juice preferably unfiltered for more flavor
  • 2 sticks cinnamon or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 cloves whole cloves for aromatic infusion
  • 1 orange citrus peel preferably from organic orange
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup to sweeten to taste

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or ladle

Method

  1. Pour the apple cider into a medium-sized saucepan and place it over medium heat.
  2. Add the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves to the cider, letting their warm spices start to infuse as the liquid warms.
  3. Slice a strip of orange peel with a vegetable peeler or sharp knife, avoiding the pith, and add it to the pot for citrus brightness.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer; you'll see small bubbles form along the edges and fragrant steam rising.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the cider simmer uncovered for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and deepen, and the aroma to fill your kitchen.
  6. Stir in honey or maple syrup, adjusting the sweetness to your preference, then remove the saucepan from heat.
  7. Use a slotted spoon or strainer to remove the spice sticks and citrus peel for a smooth, inviting beverage.
  8. Pour the hot mulled cider into mugs, then serve immediately, garnished with extra cinnamon sticks or citrus slices if desired.

Notes

Ensure gentle simmering to prevent boiling over. You can customize sweetness and spice intensity based on your taste.
