Ham and Cheese Sliders

These ham and cheese sliders are baked sandwiches made with soft dinner rolls layered with savory ham and melted cheese, then baked until bubbly and golden. The process involves layering, brushing with a buttery herb glaze, and baking to achieve a crispy, cheesy top with tender, flavorful fillings. The final appearance is irresistibly melty, golden-brown, and perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

  • 1 package dinner rolls soft, preferably unsliced
  • 1/2 pound sliced ham thinly sliced
  • 8 slices cheese slices Swiss or cheddar recommended
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs thyme or Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds (optional)

Equipment

  • Baking dish
  • Sharp knife
  • Pastry brush
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Slice the dinner rolls horizontally in half to create a top and bottom layer, then arrange the bottom halves in a baking dish cut side up.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the cut side of each roll to add brightness and flavor.
  3. Layer the sliced ham evenly over the mustard-covered rolls, covering all the bread surface for a savory base.
  4. Top the ham with slices of cheese, ensuring each slider has a good amount of gooey cheese for melting.
  5. Place the top halves of the rolls back on, gently pressing down to compact everything inside.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with garlic powder, herbs, and poppy seeds if using, then brush this mixture generously over the tops of the rolls for a buttery, flavorful glaze.
  7. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden, and the tops of the rolls are crispy and toasted.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes to allow the cheese to set slightly and make slicing easier.
  9. Use a sharp knife to cut into individual sliders, then serve warm, enjoying the crispy, cheesy, savory bites.
